Portrait photography is about connecting with a person and capturing a moment of time in their life, whether is be 1/30th of a second or 1/4000th of a second. You’re taking time from your life to immortalize a moment of someone else’s. What you do with that moment is all up to you. You can capture a moment or create one. By honing your “skillset” you can increase the probability of “happy accidents”. You never know when a person is going to laugh, sneeze, blink, or fall into the perfect pose, but that’s the beauty of it; the possibility. Connecting with your subject can lead you to a more personal and emotional image. Yet be aware that you must maintain a certain distance between you and your subject to take the image, both physically and emotionally. If you’re too close physically you literally cannot focus. If you are too close emotionally, you may lose focus. It’s all about balancing the perfect equation to take the perfect photo.
